China has reportedly voiced its opposition to the United States G20‘ bid to host the G20 Summit in 2026, as reported by a US-based media outlet, citing sources familiar with the ongoing discussions. This development coincided with the commencement of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, where notable absentees included Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The G20, comprising 19 nations and the European Union, represents a coalition of the world’s most influential and powerful economies. Notably, during the summit in New Delhi, the African Union officially joined the G20, marking a significant expansion of the group’s membership. This inclusion was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the host nation.

Despite the reported opposition, Beijing has yet to provide a formal explanation for its stance against the United States’ proposal to host the G20 Summit in 2026. The developments surrounding the summit venue selection continue to evolve, adding another layer of complexity to the dynamics within this crucial international forum.

The G20 operates under a rotational presidency system, where member nations take turns hosting the summit. Following India’s presidency, which concludes at the end of the year, Brazil is set to assume the role of host in 2024, followed by South Africa in 2025. Subsequently, the presidency is slated to return to the United States for the 2026 summit. It’s worth noting that the United States previously hosted the inaugural G20 summit in 2008, amidst the backdrop of the global financial crisis.

Sources have revealed that Beijing has expressed its dissatisfaction with the United States hosting the summit in 2026, a sentiment it reportedly wishes to have officially recorded.

While the White House has yet to offer a response to Beijing’s opposition, US Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer addressed the matter during a press briefing in New Delhi. He emphasized that the current and next two chairs of the G20 are democratic members of the BRICS group, which includes China and Russia. Finer underscored their commitment to the G20’s success and reaffirmed the United States’ intent to host the summit after these three chairs. He stated that if China opts not to participate, it would be unfortunate for everyone, but particularly so for China.

Initially, it was anticipated that Chinese President Xi Jinping would attend the G20 Summit in India. However, he was conspicuously absent, with Premier Li Qiang representing China in his place. Although the reason for Xi’s absence was not officially disclosed, there have been speculations that the ongoing border tensions between China and India, stemming from a three-year-long standoff, may have contributed to this decision.
